Loyalty


October 26, 2010, I posted the Pledge of Loyalty by Elbert Kim Hubbard. I totally agree with the message it purports to convey. Never say anything against the person or institution you are working for. I would like to believe that the idea is premise on not making public negative criticisms.

But allow me to just say this piece. This is not in any way a rebuttal of what Mr. Hubbard wrote but rather a rejoinder.

I believe that if you are really loyal to the person or institution you are working for, one must be frank and honest. Frank and honest in a constructive sense. Constructive criticisms are meant to improve or better the person or institution. It is not meant to demean or to put a person or institution in bad light.

Quite frankly, it is hard to draw the line between positive from negative criticisms if egos are involve. Also, because of our culture, we are not very receptive of any criticisms coming from others. This is especially true if the criticism is from a subordinate or an employee.

Somebody must muster the guts to say what is needed to be said privately and candidly.

Bootlickers that surround will never say it. Bootlickers will either praise or run aground other persons. They find comfort and satisfaction in seeing others suffer. That is who they are. And most often than not, these bootlickers are seen as the loyal servants.

I guess we must growl, not in public, but privately to tell the person or institution of what is wrong. I hope that I am right. I hope that when we growl by airing positive criticisms, “the first high wind that comes along” will not blow us away.
